What do we do at Christmas?

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog 🙂

Have you watched my newest video yet? I talk about common actions and activities we, Italians, do at Christmas.

Here’s a list of things we do – in Italian -:

  • decorare —> decorare l’albero di Natale – decorare la casa
  • decorazioni (decorazioni – ornaments)
  • fare e ricevere gli auguri di Natale  —> link to video
  • augurare
  • fare e ricevere i regali
  • scambiarsi i regali di Natale
  • aprire i regali
  • fare il presepe (set up the nativity scene)
  • fare l’albero
  • fare il brindisi a cena/pranzo
  • brindare
  • giocare a tombola
  • trascorrere del tempo con i parenti (to spend time with family)
  • guardare i film natalizi in tv
  • organizzare il pranzo di Natale
  • apparecchiare la tavola

In the video I forgot to mention one very important thing we do at Christmas, which is going to the Christmas mass. I usually go at midnight between the 24th and the 25th of December; it is a tradition I’ve been following for a few years now and I prefer the midnight mass to the morning mass on the 25th because it is more calm and quiet, and you can really feel the Christmas religious atmosphere, I think.

What do you do in your country at Christmas? And what’s your favourite tradition to follow?

Let me know 🙂

  1. Lucrezia,

Thank you for all of your great videos this year! These have helped me to gain confidence in my Italian skills.

My mother’s family comes from Calvello, IT in Basilicata. A tradition that we do on Christmas Eve is to make calzone. This tradition came to the US from my great grandmother who came to the US on a ship by herself when she was 12 years old. Christmas would not be the same for me without calzone!

    Buon Natale!

  2. Ciao Lucrezia!
    I have a question for you. 🙂
When do you decorate the Tree for Xmas in Italy?
I mean I know – for example – in the UK and in the USA they decorate it at the end of November or at the beginning if December (I don’t know if there is a certain time/day for them) and we – in Hungary – decorate the tree only in the evening 24th of December (la Vigilia di Natale). Basically we spend the Xmas almost the same you said in the video: the family members are together, eating special xmas foods, going to the mass (more times…), etc.
    I love Christmas! 🙂

So I wish a very merry Christmas to you!
    Buon Natale! 🙂

    1. Ciao Anett! We start decorating the house (nativity scene + tree + decorations) on the 8th of December, the day in which we celebrate the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary 🙂 That is the tradition (which my family and I follow), but many people start decorating even before that date 🙂
Thank you for sharing your tradition!! 😀

      Buona Natale anche a te!!!
      Best,

      Lucrezia
