Lesson 9: ARTICLES – ARTICOLI

Hello everybody and welcome back to my blog πŸ™‚ Today I’m going to write about ARTICLES – ARTICOLI, which are a very important part of the speech because they complete the nouns (check out Lesson 8).
There are two types of articles, definite and indefinite.
1- Articoli determinativi / Definite articles
(singular >>> plural)
  • il >>> i Β IL CANE/ I CANI (the dog/ the dogs) masculine nouns that start with a consonant.
  • lo >>> gli L’ALBERO/GLI ALBERI (the tree/the trees) the articles “lo” and “gli” are used for masculine nouns that start with a vowel
    and the following
    pn- (lo pneumatico); tire
    ps- (gli psicologi); psychologists
    gn- (lo gnomo); gnome
    z- (gli zoccoli); hoofs
    x- (lo xilofono); xylophone
    y- (lo yogurt); yoghurt
s- followed by consonant (gli scogli); rocks
i- followed by vowel (lo iodio); iodine
  • la >>> le LA STRADA/LE STRADE (the street/the streets) feminine nouns.
2- Articoli indeterminativi /Indefinite articles
  • “un” is used before masculine nouns that start with a vowel or a consonant and does not need the apostrophe. UN ALTRO (another), UN ALBERO (a tree), UN LETTO (a bed).
  • “uno” is used before masculine nouns that start with an S followed by another consonant letter. UNO STRACCIO (a rag), UNO SGABELLO (a stool)
    and the following
    pn- (lo pneumatico); tire
    ps- (gli psicologi); psychologists
    gn- (lo gnomo); gnome
    z- (gli zoccoli); hoofs
    x- (lo xilofono); xylophone
    y- (lo yogurt); yoghurt

  • “una” is used before feminine nouns. UNA MANO (a hand), UNA PALLA (a ball), UNA CANZONE (a song).
If you check any Italian grammar book, you will read that the plural for the indefinite articles is formed using partitive articles, such ad “dei, delle, etc.”(some) Now, in modern Italian it is preferable to use indefinite adjectives instead: ALCUNI, ALCUNE, QUALCHE, which can be translated into English with “some”, “several”, “a few” (just as the partitive articles). For example: QUALCHE ALBERO, QUALCHE SGABELLO, ALCUNE CANZONI.

  1. Where you’ve written “and the following” and then listed a bunch of nouns, are they exceptions? And are they the ONLY exceptions?

Speak your mind!
